First several times I watched this I thought there was a cameraman downrange (at 6:40).

I was about to get all outraged on the internet, but taking one last look it seems like Larry takes several steps behind the firing line that the cameraman is standing on. Or is he?

Here is another video from behind the line. Looks to me like the cameramen are a few steps in front of the firing line. Okay one step for the cameraman on the left.

The cameraman on the right? If he was on the line wouldn't he be "in the shot" around 6:29? (First vid.)

Now I'm too confused to be outraged. Help me out here...

Side note: never heard of Dragon Man before. Looks like he hosts an annual machine gun shoot.

I'm not crazy about the term "Gun Skeptics." It smacks of rebranding, which is common for gun control bigots. (Just ask Handgun Control Inc.)

ETA: It's common knowledge that Giffords owned a Glock 19 (at least it is with gun nuts). Barrett says as much on NPR. It seems like it would be an important piece of information to discuss with Democracy Now, but he does not mention it. I'm willing to bet that he told them before they where on the air, and they told him not to say it.

You can take several things from this video.

Things I picked out:

When the little voice inside you head starts telling you "DON'T GO TO THIS PLACE CAUSE YOU CAN GET SHOT"- listen to it.

The gun is only identified as a shotgun. Law of averages would make it a 12 gauge loaded with birdshot (7/8/9). Regardless, he is very, very lucky to be alive. I'm not well versed on ballistics but it seems to be more chaos theory than science (I know). Point is any gun can fail, so plan accordingly.

When you get shot (shoot back{doesn't really apply for a 17 year old}) you can lay down and die or you can keep moving, keep fighting, keep living. If you want to make the point that a higher power was pushing him forward I would not fault you for it. I may in fact be a miracle that he is alive.

He went to court and testified. Good.

Finally took a pic of my Cold Steel AK-47 (old model) which is a very good for left hand carry.

Mind you I am not left handed. Well I write and shoot with my right hand, I throw and swing a sword (SCA) with my left.

I do fancy the notion that if you carry a pistol you should have a knife on the opposite side. If someone ever grabs for your gun, your dominant hand will be busy trying to keep the gun locked into the holster, and your off hand will be left the task of convincing said someone they have made some poor life choices.

Could you provide an authoritative interpretation of the phrase "well-regulated" ?

My answer.

What time is it? look at your microwave/ wall clock/ cable box/ watch/ phone. If they are in in sync then they are "well-regulated".
When the 2A was penned a militia was expected to muster together, drill together, march together, and fire volleys together.

A well regulated militia was better in combat, therefore the state was better secured.

That was off the cuff but in all honesty I most likely cribbed it from the likes of Dave Hardy or David E. Young.

I know Hi-Points have a reputation as a pot metal boat anchor, but I have also heard they go bang every time. A few year ago (wow it was 2002) Gun Test Magazine tested a 9mm carbine from Hi-Point and rated it a Best Buy.

Anybody want to grade my work, as I have never shot an H&K or a Makarov?

I want to get a CCW, and it is possible now where I live.
Advice needed:
I have two candidates for carry, an HK USP Compact in 9mm and a Makarov in 9X18. Which would be the best choice? The HK is more powerful, but the Mak is slimmer. In our CCW permit system, you have to list the pistol you will be carrying, as well as qualify on it, so I have to decide soon.

Makarov is fine for what it is, BUT it is like you are asking should I drive a BMW or a Yugo.

Wiki says the Mak is not drop safe.

Can you get the safety off on the Mak under pressure??? (you could carry it DA safety off)

It can be hard to find defense ammo for the Mak, CCI Blazer has some Gold Dot JHPs.

H&K will have better sights, better trigger, more ammo, and better ammo selection, and I think 9mm ammo is a bit cheaper.

Weight and length are very close.

I've been falling down on the blog this week and I really am far behind on blade posts. So here are so quick and dirty (heh) pics taken before yard work commenced.

Two things I clean less than my guns.

This is one of my first (good) knives. A Cold Steel LTC (Light Terrain Chopper) Factory Second. Note it is NOT a machete, IIRC it is Carbon V steel. You really don't want to know how many times it has been smacked into the stone foundation of the house, for what must be almost 20 years.

Why We Win: on the Travel Channel

Take a famous New York Chef, give him a hit TV show on the Travel Channel, send him and his crew out to the Ozarks, and what happens?

He gets all gun nutty.

First he cleans a squirrel and eats squirrel pot pie and some bow hunt venison. Then he goes gigging for fish, which turns out to be more dangerous than hunting. Then there is an unsuccessful raccoon hunt. Duck hunting and duck cooking. And finally, just because that is not enough, some tin cans get shot to end the show.

Part one, Part two, and Part three starts with the duck hunting.

And this is no fluke. Guns are fairly common on the show. For example
Anthony Bourdain has rode along on a seal hunt and shot full-autos with Ted Nugent.

And there are other shows out there that put guns in front of several million eyeballs. Mythbusters being one of the best. As well as Pawn Stars, American Pickers and Auction Hunters (a show I just discovered). Hell even Top Gear on the BBC tried some skeet shooting.

Throw in shows like Top Shot and Sons of Guns and the TV guide must make Sarah Brady a very sad lonely Panda.

One neighbor thinks it was a planned rolling blackout. Said the city had stop signs up at major intersections as if they knew it was coming. If that is true I hope it was for some planned maintenance and not some penny pinching scheme.

Heard on local radio.

All the flooding that we have seen over the past few months? Turns out environmentalist have been pushing an agenda to stop flood control.

The stable flow of water allowed for the construction of the concrete and earthen levees that protect more than 10 million people who reside and work within the river's reach. It allowed millions of acres of floodplain to become useful for farming and development.

But after about thirty years of operation, as the environmentalist movement gained strength throughout the seventies and eighties, the Corps received a great deal of pressure to include some specific environmental concerns into their MWCM (Master Water Control Manual, the "bible" for the operation of the dam system).

Things turned absurd from there. An idea to restore the nation's rivers to a natural (pre-dam) state swept through the environmental movement and their allies.

(A) wildlife biologist with the Corps of Engineers in Yankton, SD, told the Seattle Times that this event will leave the river in a "much more natural state than it has seen in decades," describing the epic flooding as a "prolonged headache for small towns and farmers along its path, but a boon for endangered species."

The recess appointment that did not bark?

When the Senate went on winter break, in December, it was widely feared by Second Amendment Supporters that President Obama would seize on the chance to recess appoint Andrew Traver to head The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The Christian Science Monitor story on Traver from November 19th seems to take a recess appointment for granted. Even Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made a call earlier in the year for the President to recess appoint stalled nominees.

The President passed up that chance and a collective sigh of relief was heard throughout the land. At the time I was scratching my head (why are they dumb?)

What if they knew a storm was coming?

On December 14th Border Patrol Agent Brian A. Terry was shot and killed, and very quickly the internal rumors at ATF was that it was a "walked" gun.

To the best of my knowledge the first local news stories on "Project Gunwalker" where in early January. Fox picked it up on February 2nd one day after the Senate recess ended.

It begs the questions What did you know, and when did you know it?

Did someone want to keep Traver clear and let Melson take the fall.

Did the President know? Most likely not.

Did he want to appoint Traver, and was waved off by Holder? Another administration official? (lacky, flunky, bagman.)

Is there a paper trail? An interoffice memo telling Holder to hold off. a smoking gun? would the media care?

All these questions would be ruled speculative in a court of law.
